Usually a new Sony retail store would not have my attention. However, the new Sony Style is located at the Singapore's very own Changi Airport (terminal 3).

In fact, Sony claim this to be the world first Sony Style store in an international airport. It opens 9 January 2008.

Courts Causeway point is having a roadshow at the atrium.

For a clearer view on how good is the deals, lets take NEC S3300 for example, at the last SITEX, it is going for S$1799 with free gifts being NEC Gift Pack, 2GB Ram upgrade and carrying case. However, this time, the retail price is S$1600 with 2GB Ram upgrade. So the difference is S$100 for a Gift Pack and probably a carrying case (no idea whether Courts will give you that bag).

And of course you can pick up some unofficial bargain at the SITEX. But I believed its still a good offer from Courts.

I don't want to clog the post with boring analysis but if you want more of my two cents on a particular model, give me a comment.

Asus Eee PC is back in Singapore again and its getting into major electronic stores this time. After we said we saw it at Harvey Norman and Challenger, we spotted it at Courts too. Since we found it at the Causeway Point branch, we wondered if the Asus product is on sale at every branch.

Here is one more reason to buy a iPod Touch now. 3rd party applications support! Of course it is not the effort of Apple.

Note that there are actually two methods to doing the hack. The difference between the two is an additional step to load the files onto your computer. I personally think the extra-step method is faster and safer. The first method can be found in the first link below. And the extra-step method is demostrated with in the video (links below). If you have the budget, Fujitsu is always an outstanding candidate for notebooks. What I like about them is the build quality, really.

Several highlights for this fair:
  1. Trade-in program (minimum a pentium 3 600mhz)
  2. Free Acronis Data Backup Software (worth S$99)
  3. Free gifts (Ram upgrade, Optical mouse, OKI Laser Printer, Cash Rebate, Digital Photo Frame etc)

It is not that Motorola is not releasing new phones lately, but the new products all look so similar. Motorola Z8 however, is not in that category. The form factor alone (its curvy!) is sufficient to arouse our curosity. Z8 is officially release back in February 2007 and it took almost 10 months to hit the Singapore shores.

Photobucket
Motorola Z8
  • 2.2" TFT LCD, 16 million colours
  • microSD slot
  • Symbian OS v9.2

  • 3.5G
  • Bluetooth (A2DP)
  • 2 Megapixels, flash, Secondary Camera (VGA)

Photobucket

First off, Z8 is a very eye-catching phone for its shape and colours. Second, the idea of shape is to create more comfort when you hold the phone for calls. Nice ideas here.

Motorola's own user interface has come under lots of criticism but for Z8, its Symbian instead. Good. And Symbian allows third party applications. However note that the buttons might not be to your liking as it could be kind of unresponsive.

Average features sums up Motorola Z8 here. 2 Megapixels without autofocus and no Wi-Fi. Overall, its another "style over substance" type of phone.

I like this Z8 for its looks and this is a innovative one by Motorola. But I really believe Motorola could have make Z8 a great splash by including better features like Wi-Fi or a better camera. Because as much as Z8 can capture our attention, we are all disappointed as soon as we discover what exactly is in store for us.

Motorola Z8 is going for S$318 for a two year Singtel contract.

If you own an iPod and switch between your iPod and mobilephone for on-the-go music entertainment, I am sure you are going through a troublesome process trying to update songs on both devices.

iTunes Sync is here to help. Basically, iTunes Sync allows you to transfer music from iTunes to other media players other than the iPod. Yep its that simple, yet so useful for many.

And this software gives those of you who don't own a iPod a chance to try iTunes. I personally recommend iTunes for its simplicity media management.

No surprise here as LCD TVs sales in Singapore soar reported by The Straits Times on Thursday. 2007 is the year when we see the prices of LCD TVs really plunged. This is certainly due to the maurity of the technology and we should be expecting the prices to decline like any other technology gadget.

32" LCD TVs should be in the range of S$700 to S$1,000 in year 2008. A 32" LCD TV from a reputable brand costs up to S$1399. Well of course I am not talking about prices at the IT shows!

We use search engine for nearly everyday, don't we? Why not save abit of resources for our mother earth by using Blackle?

It is essentially Google, our favourite search engine, just that it comes with a black interface. According to Blackle, a monitor requires more power to produce white than black. Hence, if we could all set our homepage to Blackle.com, then we will save abit of power everytime we open our web browser.

The saving maybe little, but it could add up.

Samsung F330
  • TFT LCD, 256K colours
  • microSD slot
  • 3.5G

  • FM Radio
  • Bluetooth (A2DP)
  • 2 Megapixels, autofocus, secondary camera
Samsung F330 is a beauty. The mirror and white plastic housing made it look so classy. However, prepare for a geasy mirror and a dirty white housing after sometime. Then you will also like the delicated music controls which is rather space out. Beside the music control is the touch sensitive buttons.

This Samsung offers pretty much nothing special in terms of features but includes all the basic functions such as bluetooth and microSD slot.

Overall, its style over substance for Samsung F330 and its selling for S$268 for a 2 year contract.

Christmas is here, good deals are here! This time we found something for those with little or no budget for Christmas presents. Introducing the USB Mug Heater!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

As some may have heard of it, some haven't, it does not matter. The point here is that this is a perfect Christmas present! It can be so useful and yet its not really popular in Singapore. Some models of the Mug Heater comes with USB hub as well. It can run up to 80 degrees celcius and not forgetting a on/off switch by the side of the gadget.

So where to buy? e-bay of course, as many would say. But I saw it at E-Life@Suntec City. Its in the store full of PC accessories and going for just S$3.80! As we say, its always the heart that matters, not the price of the present. Warm coffee always!

sumoDRIVE is developed by Singapore's A*Star (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) and commercialized by EDS Labs, Suzuki Technology. Its biggest selling point is the fact that it can connect to other wireless devices to transfer media between them.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

sumoDRIVE
  • Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g)
  • 30GB Hard Disk (1.8")
  • WEP and Password Protection

  • Built-in rechargeable lithium polymer battery
  • Battery life about 2.5 hours
  • Charging time about 2.5 hours
sumoDRIVE comes with USB power adaptor and pouch.

While sumDRIVE reminds us of the heavyweight Sumo Wrestlers, this hard disk is certainly tiny relative to its capabilities. And at S$399, despite a mere 30GB, could still be a good deal.

While everyone else is trying to squeeze more pixels into the phone, Samsung Mobile did something else. They manage to squeeze one more SIM card slot into their latest phone to debut in Singapore, D880. Samsung D880

  • microSD slot
  • FM Radio and Bluetooth (A2DP)

  • Business card reader application
  • Document viewer
  • TV-out port

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
As you may notice, Samsung D880 is average in all aspects except the wow factor of having 2 SIM card slots. And some might have heard of China-made phones with dual SIM card as well but the problem is those didn't turn out to be useful for various reasons.

So the next question would be: Can you get calls on both SIM cards (two phone numbers)?

The answer is yes, according to the current users. That is to say both SIM cards are active and you can toogle between them to make calls or surf the net with GPRS. In the case of incoming call, the display which card is in use. D880 is also said to be able to work with cards from different operators.

All in all, D880 is suitable for frequent travellers and of course people with two numbers. It is basically a business phone without 3G however, which is neccesary for corporate usage.

Samsung D880 is selling for S$668 (without contract) now at the Bookfest 2007, Suntec City.

2. So Suzuki Technology is launching their series of notebooks at Bookfest 2007, organized by Popular Bookstore. Their booth is at the Multimedia corner of this book fair.

3. Suzuki Technology even produces CD-RWs, DVD-RWs, SD cards, MiniSD cards, Micro SD cards, Processors and graphics cards.

LG's KU990 Viewty is essentially a entertainment phone and it is very similiar to LG's Prada phone. However, its capabilities are far better than the Prada's edition. Then again, can Viewty replace your digital camera? Find out as we look at LG KU990 Viewty.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

LG KU990 Viewty
  • 5 Megapixels, Autofocus, ISO800, Xenon flash, 2592 x 1944 pixels, 16x digital zoom
  • Secondary camera
  • Record video at 120 fps

  • 3.5G
  • 3" LCD
  • Upload video directly to YouTube

  • Micro SD slot (underneath the battery)
  • FM Radio and Bluetooth A2DP
  • 112g

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The inital look LG Viewty could make you notice the thickness of the phone because it looked bulky. But the classy outlook will more than make up for it. Then you turn phone around and you see a digital camera with large lens. At this moment is where you will realise that it does not come with a lens cover!

With the fiddling of Viewty physcially, the next thing is to check out the navigation aspect especially important with touchscreen phones. For this 3" LCD, the screen is rather responsive and could be set to vibrate with each touch to give users a better feedback. There are also few buttons around the phone, notably the side where the shutter buttion is. Next to the shutter button is the switch to change among preview, still and video mode. One thing constant across reviews is the diffculty to push this switch.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Next, you should know that LG KU990 Viewty possess probably the best video function in the mobile phone market. Because of the 120 fps ability, you can record fast moving objects and replay in slow motion. Extremely good for sports people. Besides videos, Viewty also takes good photos (superb on the 3" LCD). However, the best of all, Viewty plays DivX! DivX and 3" widescreen on the go!

Our biggest disappointment with Viewty is with its lack of Wi-Fi. We also note that the jog style wheel to adjust the digital zoom (placed with the lens, the large wheel) is diffcult to adjust when taking photos.

The bottomline is LG KU990 will not replace your digital camera. It has no optical zoom and basic manual settings. It would complement your digital camera instead.

So at S$838 (no contract) or S$488 (Singtel 2 year contract) we would not say that LG KU990 Viewty is over-price. If you always lament the video quality of your mobilephone, LG KU990 Viewty could be the solution. Or, you just want to look cool with a touchscreen phone.

First, we recommend Samsung DVDP370 DVD player which is retailing at S$79! And in this case, the slick design of the player is already worth the S$79 price tag. The price is not particularly cheap for DVD players especially when there are many choices (such as Akira, and Shinco). Besides the design, you also can be assured of the quality of Samsung DVD players.

If you are in for a DVD player without HDMI cable, this could be the pick.

Samsung YP-K3 is on sale at S$129. Well, YP-K3 is belongs to Samsung's older line-up of audio players. The similiar replacement for K3 is Samsung T10.

The highlights of K3 is notably its slim design, and the glossy outlook. Note that it does not play videos but is a very capable audio player in terms of sound quality. Other features includes FM Radio and picture viewer. You might also like its flashy OLED display which is very unique from the rest of the crowd. All in all, S$129 is a very good price.

If you have never heard of Mozilla Firefox or you are not using it yet, Read on!

Introduction

Mozilla Firefox is a open-source web browser (Like Internet Explorer). Being an open-source application has generate from the development community and they are trying to create new functions and fix security loop holes all the time. Unsurprisingly, Firefox's popularity is only second to Internet Explorer. It is not that more people prefer Internet Explorer but for the fact that almost all computers come with it installed.

Why Firefox?
1. Mozilla Firefox is free!
While Firefox is free, its quality and features are of really high standards.

2. Firefox helps to protect your computer from virus.
It is the single most important reason why you should swtich to Firefox. According to unofficial statistics, 70% of the virus and spyware are meant for Internet Explorer. This is because most people are using Internet Explorer and the virus-maker wants its virus to affect more computers. If you are using Internet Explorer now, download Firefox now!

3. Firefox is fast.
If you are still using Internet Explorer to read this paragraph, you should know that Firefox typically load a page faster than Internet Explorer.Try it for yourself, download Firefox now!

4. You do not need to learn to use Firefox!
First of all, it is easy to install Firefox. Its a small download of about 20MB and the installation process takes you less than 3 minutes! Meanwhile, the interface of Internet Explorer and Firefox is not very different. Almost everything else is in the same place. See it for yourself, download Firefox now!

5. Fantastic add-ons to Firefox.
The community suppoting Firefox has really created a tremendous amount of extensions and plug-ins, something which Internet Explorer simply cannot compare. We have included our favourites here.

Bottomline
Well, you might suspect that we are employed by Mozilla Firefox but seriously, we are not. Neither are we putting down Microsoft's effort to improve Internet Explorer because it has really improved over the years.

Aigo has to be commended for their effort to produce innovative products compared to the rest of China (esp. those no-brand Chinese manufacturer). They even managed to put their name on the Formula One racing suit. And their latest products certainly shown some good work has been done.

Aigo P881
  • 160GB Built-in hard disk
  • Readable format includes RM/.RMVB
  • 4.3" TFT LCD (480 x 272)

  • 16:9 Widescreen
  • Supports Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10 (DRM 10)
  • AV-Out Port

  • SNR > 88dB (Sound Noise Ratio)
  • Official battery life is about 12 hours for audio and 3 hours for video
  • Weighs about 180g (124mm x 76mm x 28mm)
Aigo P881 comes with the usual earphones, USB and USB host cable, line-in cable, AV cable, AC adaptor, installation CD and user manual.

First look at P881, it seems to be a very "clean" media player since all the buttons are hidden by the side. Aigo P881's thickness is also roughly the same as most other players and you will find a table stand (at the back of the player) that helps the player to stand upright on flat surface.

There are also buttons line-up on two sides of the player and it seems that the buttons are all very "tacky" (which means it gives you a plastic feeling). Finally, the ports are by the right side on the player with a cover.

The display quality is excellent. Note that, according to other reviews, the viewing angle is rather narrow. And there is no customized EQ and FM radio, stuff that people usually look out for.

Supported format are:
RM/RMVB
AVI (DivX 3.11/4.x/5.1/5.2, Xvid)
WMV (Microsoft WMV9)
MP4
ASF
DAT
SWF (FLASH4/5/6)

Aigo P881 is going at S$699 at the moment. And as you probably realised, the best part about P881 is its ability to play .rm and .rvmb. The truth is however, would you pay S$699 for it?

No doubt its a rather large 160GB hard disk, our guess is not everyone would be willing to fork out that sum of money for it. Not when notebooks are going for S$777. And we are used to converting our movies into mpeg4.

Sony Ericsson's new heavyweight phone is available in Singapore now. And heavyweight does not refer to its physical weight but the fact that its got terrific features in it. This could well be the Sony Ericsson's last phone in 2007.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Sony Ericsson W960i
  • 3.2 Mega Pixels, 3x digital zoom, Auto-focus, Secondary VGA Camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
  • 2.6" TFT LCD, Touchscreen, 262K Colours, Handwriting recognition

  • 8GB Storage memory
  • Document Editor
  • 3G

  • Symbian OS v9.1
  • FM Radio with RDS
  • 9 hours talktime
W960i has got everything you want in a entertainment phone and features that actually make it superior to the rest. Large storage (for a mobilephone), Wi-Fi, 3.2 MP camera and a touchscreen makes W960i a rather complete phone. Well, touchscreen is more of a gimmick than necessary since it comes with a full keypad (unless you need the handwriting recognition). And for so much features, W960i is thin enough in my opinion.

The price tag is reasonable too, at S$895 without contract (found the price at a local retailer's web). However with a S$900 budget there is much competition out there.

It seems that ASUS Eee is the hottest gadget in town now and its really out of stock in Singapore. However, the word is that there are plenty overseas and some forumers are selling though we aren't sure about the price that they charged.

For the record, ASUS Eee PC 701 is on sale for S$598 at SITEX 2007 (1st dec launch) and it is promptly sold out in a matter of hours. Our local version comes with Linux pre-installed but on that launch day, buyers can upgrade to Windows Professional SP2 onsite. At the same time, buyers can get Microsoft Office 2007 Student and Home Editon and get Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 80GB free.

As reported in the newspaper yesterday, Apple has threatened to fine retailers selling parallel imported iPhones at S$1,000 per set. Officially, iPhones will be hitting the local stores next year. The imported iPhones have to be "unlocked" in order to be used together with our local SIM cards.

The "unlocking" of the iPhones has violated the legal issues, not the retailing of imported sets. Meaning to say, retailers can sell imported iPhones provided they do not "unlocked" the firmware of the sets. And that means you can't make calls with the phone (using the local operators).

The local retailers said that they would not risk a small profit for such hefty fines.

Well, we can't wait for the iPhones either. Meanwhile, you can still try its clone, the iPod Touch at Epicentre. The navigating system is wonderful but its capabilities is rather limited in our opinion. But then again thesedays people value style and design more than ever.

As we wake up on the 2nd day of the week after SITEX 2007, Creative announces "the world first 32GB flash memory-based portable media player". The very first question that pops up is why didn't they do it at SITEX 2007? It would create good publicity despite their rather small booth (by their usual standard). This aside, Creative is still the best Singapore has to offer in the portable digital audio player industry.

This 32GB version of ZEN is a direct upgrade from the previous ZEN (with 4GB/8GB/16GB) which has impressed with its superb display and appearance. The upgrade is critical to Creative's sales after the recent new line-up from the iPods.

The price for the 32GB version is S$549. (S$249 for 4GB, S$349 for 8GB , S$449 for 16GB).

Is it a good deal? Yes, of course given the quality and the features of Creative ZEN. But compared to the iPod, for S$549, you can get a 80GB iPod Classic for S$428 (S$100++ lesser). Or you pay S$150 more and get a 160GB iPod. Make your decision if you have cash to spare.
