HD DVD

Recent weeks have seen the high profile incident where Toshiba quit their pet format, High Defination DVD (HD DVD), after the major blow from Warner. (If you are not sure what had happened, search "Toshiba" and "Warner" in Google.)

To begin with, High Defination DVD (HD DVD) has never really took off anywhere in the world let alone our tiny island. Hence, its no surprise that prices of HD DVD related products fall. So as our local media reports, HD DVD movies and Xbox's HD DVD drives all had their prices cut.

MacBook

A day after Apple United States launch their new updated MacBooks, Singapore Apple store receives the same stocks. Check out our previous post to see the major upgrades to the Apple's notebook series.

On the pricing side, the cheapest MacBook is now at S$1,688, faster and cheaper (by S$100) than the previous version of MacBook. This also reflect the overall price drop and better specifications for all MacBook and MacBook Pro.

If you are considering getting a MacBook or Macbook Pro lately, hold your horses. This is because Apple has just updated their famous notebooks! And as per normal, Singapore do not get the upgrades immediately though my bet is for it to happen within a month. Surely you do not want to buy a MacBook now and tomorrow your new purchase becomes a thing of yesterday.

Consistent improvement to existing products has long been the motto for Apple, the icon for being cool and fashionable in Singapore. This time round, the upgrades are rather neccessary in my opinion.

1. Graphics Card
MacBook Pro now comes with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with up to 512MB of video memory. Gaming MacBook Pro anyone?

2. Trackpad
Multi-Touch support for MacBook Pro. Cool. Nope, it does not come with MacBook.

3. Processor
Don't be fool by the specifications where a slower proccessor speed is quoted for the Macbooks. As for the MacBook Pro, its 2.6Ghz now! The new 45mn processors for both the series are purpose to increase the computer performance by 50%.

4. Wireless Connection
802.11n has arrived! Absolutely keeps MacBook in line with the current technology.

5. Storage and Memory
General improvement for both series; for example the 2.4Ghz MacBook gets a standard 2GB Ram and 250GB hard drive.

MacBook Air, Apple TV Take 2, iPhones updates... 2008 has just begun and well done to Mr Jobs.

iPod Shuffle

Apple has announced a price drop for its 1GB iPod Shuffle. The drop is S$50, from S$138 to S$78 now. And at the same time, they slated to release a 2GB version as well (S$108).

Despite the new pricing, iPod Shuffle is still way more expensive than its clone, the Creative ZEN Stone (Not that Apple really cares about Creative). Creative ZEN Stone, the one without screen, is at S$79 for 2GB. So consumers will be paying the same price for different capacity.

Microsoft Office 2007 may not have impress many but nevertheless, its users are on a steady rise. Certainly due to the monopoly that Microsoft holds. Indeed, most of my peers in school are slowly switching to Office 2007 from the 2003 version.

Nothing wrong with that except that now Office 2007 comes with this formats;
  • .pptx
  • .docx
  • .xlsx
Then the problem arises. Because while some have upgraded, some have not! In other words, those who are not using 2007 version cannot read these formats. It had happened so many times over the last few months since the launch of Office 2007.

Here are two ways to avoid the trouble:
  1. For those who are still using Office 2000, 2002, 2003, download this. Link

  2. For those using Office 2007, spare a thought for your peers. If you are not using SmartArt or other features new in Office 2007, save your files in .doc, .xls and .ppt. You can actually allow your Office 2007 to automatically save as these formats.
  • Step 1: Click the Microsoft Office logo at the top left hand corner.
  • Step 2: Click "Word Options" at the bottom of the menu.
  • Step 3: Go to "Save".
  • Step 4: Find "Save files in this format"
  • Step 5: Change option to ".doc"
*Method is the same for PowerPoint and Excel.
Valentine Day is one day where price of the flowers rockets. Perharps it is better off to grab something else more practical? Not that your girlfriend would agree.

These earphones should impress most of ladies population. And of course the prices are rather steep for a brandless earphones but at least my sister loved them very much.

Lenovo is a brand that I like simply because they got my favourite notebook series, Thinkpad. It looks tough and at the same time do not compromise on the performance.

X61 is the one that impress me the most in the current line-up. It has got everything I need in a notebook except the price and optical drive. At least Lenovo bundle the external drive for free, unlike MacBook Air.

Anyone with intention to buy a notebook lately should know that the IT Show 2008 is only about a month away. Anyway here is Lenovo's offer during for the month.

The deal is basically; S$168 off certain models and 6 months free McAfee Internet Security Suite (Terms and Conditions apply).

It’s the small iPod with one very big idea: Video. Now the world’s most popular music player lets you enjoy home movies, video podcasts, and more. The larger, brighter display means amazing picture quality. In six eye-catching colours, iPod nano is stunning all around. And with 4GB and 8GB models starting at just S$ 248, little speaks volumes.

If you are considering getting Creative's media player, its probably about time. Because I don't remember Creative having better deals than these during the IT/PC shows.

Amazingly, the ZEN 32GB is out of stock according to the online store and today is the first day of the promotion! Maybe you can get them over at its outlets. At S$499 with T10 speakers I must say its quite a good price.

I think the stocks of ZEN Stone Plus with Built-in speakers have arrived as they have removed the "COMING SOON" tag. But its not the case for MuVo T200 though.

Promotion from Feb 1 to Feb 29 2008. Leap year! Once every four years.

6 days to Chinese New Year. Yay!
